Every MRE includes an entrée, a side dish, a dessert or snack, crackers or bread, a powdered beverage, utensils, gum, a napkin, a towelette, and seasonings such as salt, pepper, and sugar. On average, an MRE provides around 1,250 calories, with a balanced composition of 13% protein, 36% fat, and 51% carbohydrates.

With proper storage, these meals can remain fresh and edible for over 10 years after the date of packaging, making them ideal for outdoor activities like camping and hiking, as well as emergencies and preparedness situations.
